The first year of High School is one of the most important periods of time for any young person.

Academically, physically, emotionally and socially there are challenges to be faced and new situations to deal with. Most learners are not equipped to meet these challenges, and are unprepared for this vital stage in their lives. The results of this can be seen in underachievement and antisocial behaviour at high school.

The sat.nav. (Satellite Navigation) course aims to minimise those fears and trepidations and prepare the learner for what lies ahead, giving him or her the skills and courage needed to cope and succeed.

It is a values-based course run over four sessions at the school itself, or at a camp, during the early part of Grade 8, and is presented in a multimedia format. Participants all receive a manual which we work through together.

Sessions:

My Purpose Why am I here? What motivates me?
My Place How do I fit in at high school? Where do I find my value?
My Performance How do I keep up academically? What should I do extra-murally? How do I set goals for myself?
My Pledge What do I believe in, and how am I going to make sure I have as few regrets as possible? How should I choose my friends?

"Every High School should offer its learners this course!" - Mmarona Motsegoa, Grade 10 RCL Executive Member, the Hill High School

"The [sat.nav.] course helped me to cope with the move up to high school... it was quite a change" - Adam Fairall, Grade 11 learner

Becoming a Leader Course

Learners elected into leadership positions in their early teenage years because of the potential others see in them do not naturally know how to perform their many duties in a way that supports their teachers and enables them to be responsible and effective leaders.

Leadership is a skill that can be developed and nurtured, and through the Becoming a Leader course, this is what we do. It is a ground-breaking course that is unique in its approach and depth, and is not aimed solely at those who are already leaders, but to all those who desire to increase their leadership skills. Basic principles of leadership are taught, and theory and practical training are given to help your leaders to fulfil their roles. Through looking at aspects like character, morals, initiative, implementing rules and standards, teamwork and relating to superiors and subordinates we teach basic principles that can be used in every leadership role the learner may one day find him- or herself in.

The course can be presented either as part of a camp (which we recommend, as this includes practical and team-building activities to accompany the theory), or at the school itself as a seminar. Prices are excellent, from as little as R210 for a weekend camp (which includes all meals, accommodation, course manuals and all activities on a beautiful 4500 acre campsite an hour from Johannesburg), or R650 for a seminar at the school (excluding manuals)

The course is divided into four sections:

  1. Me, a leader

    • My Character - What makes a good leader?
    • Morals - Are morals important for a leader?
    • Mentoring - How do I find a mentor?

  2. Why lead?

    • Initiative - Who takes the initiative?
    • Influence - How do I become an influencer?
    • Implementing rules and standards - Whose job is it?

  3. How do I lead?

    • Purpose - What is my purpose and our purpose as leaders?
    • People - How do become a people person?
    • Persuasion - How do I motivate others?

  4. Being a team player

    • Trust - Do I believe in myself and my team?
    • Teamwork - How do I get the best out of everybody?
    • Tough tasks - How can we take on difficult jobs and duties?
    • Trying people - How can I work with such difficult people?

What people are saying about 'Becoming a Leader':

"I would greatly endorse the leadership and High School preparation courses run by ergo leadership. We have found that these courses have equipped our learners with the skills needed to cope and excel in areas of leadership and interaction within the Primary and High School environments… There is an understanding of the learner as an individual and an insight into their different developmental stages" - Mrs Karen Warder (Principal, Highveld Primary School)

"Leadership skills will always be critically important for corporate and personal success, and so I heartily endorse this initiative to introduce our young people to leadership training.
